In this photo we most thank Mr. Knight of Knight industries for stopping for photos of the Stoner 63 after running a 200 round belt through the gun in one run.

The Stoner 63

Gene Stoner working with Cadillac Gage Corporation developed first the idea of a weapon system built around a common receiver assemblies. Stoner 62 system was based on the 7.62mm NATO cartridge. The design was interrupted when it became apparent that the United States was moving to the 5.56 45mm Cartridge. The new design was then updated to the 63 system. On completion the system contained, six separate but integrate weapon configurations. A carbine, a rifle, magazine feed light machine gun, belt feed light machine gun, a medium machine gun and a fixed machine gun-tankers style.

The rifles were designated as XM22 by the US Army and the carbines were XM23. During the mid sixty the US military tested the Stoner 63 numerous times. Several improvements where made to the system from the feed back of these trials. The MK23(XM207) was the only one of the designs to see combat for it was used by navy SEAL teams.
